Haumoana Speech Competition 2017
WALT: to prepare and present an age-appropriate speech on any aspect of the topic of ‘We are Explorers’ to an audience of peers.
- You will need to think about and include reasons about the importance of the explorer or their journey of exploration to society.
- This is a formal speech competition.
- Length of the speech is approximately 3 minutes.
- The speech should be persuasive and informative – you are encouraging the audience to think and feel the way YOU do about your chosen inspirational explorer’. It can be entertaining, humorous and engaging as a means of persuading the audience to see your point of view and should ultimately hold the attention of the audience.
- Visual aids are permitted i.e. digital devices, projectors, audio. However, you may use props and gestures.
- Take out any reference to the actual speech eg….. “My speech is about…….”, or ending with “… coming to the end of my speech …”
- You may ask questions (rhetorical questions), but members of the audience do not answer them nor make any comment during the speech competition.
- There is no need to thank anyone for listening to your speech.
- One of the skills to be learned is using cue cards. Even if you know your speech by heart you will be marked on your management of the cue cards and how you refer to them.
Cards should fit easily in one hand. Cards are between business card and playing card size. Write on one side only – key points, not the whole speech. And, remember to number each card.
- You will be judged on the content and delivery of your speech (see the judging criteria below). The way in which you deliver your speech is just as important as what you have to say!
